The present economy and recession is the worst it has been since the great depression several decades ago. For the first time in history, large corporations are going under and so many people are being laid off from their jobs that the unemployment rate is rising rapidly in every state. This has caused many people to try to get whatever work they can, even if it is a lower level job. For example, it is now common to see a former white collar professional taking a job operating a prepress equipment and CTP in order to make some money. This has made applying for jobs an extremely competitive one.
Just a decade ago ago it would be a surprise to see someone with a college degree and years of strong work experience under their belt doing a job such as a cashier at a store, or a truck dirver for a fast food chain of restaurants. Now that is all too common, as many Americans are trying to get whatever employment they can after losing their well paying jobs.
In an interesting twist, one such man who had two bachelor college degrees and was a VP of a company before and is now driving a night shift truck making deliveries, is grateful to be doing the work he is doing and says it changed his life. He claimed before this, he looked down on people that had this type of employment and felt that he was above them. Now after having switched to that type of work himself, it has opened his eyes to the fact that no one is above anyone else and everyone works hard at every job they do and he is so thankful for having learned this lesson.
Job openings have also now become a crowded event attracting thousands of applicants at times. The amount of people that turn up to apply for a job make it so much more competitive than it has ever been. Older people are worried that their age will be a reason of not getting hired over the years of experience they have. While younger applicants just trying to get started in being on their own after graduating from school are having difficulty competing with those that have work experience to offer. It is quite common to see employers hiring workers that are overqualified for a job and may even be more qualified than the people that hired them.
In order to compete in this difficult job market and to get noticed by a company that is hiring; you should be well prepared for the interview. Make certain to dress in appropriate business attire like a suit or nice slacks and a blouse and practice the the nonverbal communication gestures such as having a firm handshake, good eye contact and a positive, confidant demeanor. The non-verbal cues that you give off are as imperative as what you say during the interview.
